DARK GREEN VASE
The great pottery traditions of the ancient world — Greek, Roman, Persian, Chinese — were built by craftspeople who spent their entire lives perfecting a single form. The vase. Not because the vase was the most useful object available, but because its particular combination of curves, its bilateral symmetry, its balance between the narrow neck and the generous body, made it the most satisfying shape that human hands had found to make.
For thousands of years, every culture that discovered the wheel and the kiln arrived independently at the same conclusion: the vase is worth making beautifully.
Dark Green Vase takes that ancient obsession and runs it through a contemporary studio in full experimental mode — where washi tape and spray paint and Posca markers replace the kiln, and the decoration that ancient potters applied through months of painstaking work arrives instead through layers of colour and pattern that build up with the particular energy of an artist testing what happens when you stop planning and start doing.
The dark green form carries the depth and seriousness of antique glazed ceramics — a colour that has been used in pottery since before recorded history, that reads simultaneously as organic and refined, as ancient and entirely present. Around it, circles and patterns erupt in blues, reds and warm tones with a vitality that no ancient potter, working within the constraints of their tradition, could have allowed themselves.
This is what happens when five thousand years of ceramic tradition meets an artist who isn't afraid to see what else it can become.
