PALM TREE
There is a particular fantasy that the mind reaches for when the noise becomes too much.
Not a specific place — a quality. The particular stillness of a desert at dusk, when the heat of the day has finally relented and the air carries the particular silence of vast empty space. A palm tree at the edge of an oasis, its roots finding water where nothing else can. The suggestion of shade. The sound of nothing urgent happening anywhere nearby.
Every culture that has ever produced great art, great philosophy or great spirituality has understood the desert as a place of essential truth — where everything unnecessary falls away and what remains is exactly what you actually are. The oasis is not an escape from that truth. It is its reward.
Palm Tree is the vessel that carries that mood.
The jarrón in deep blue — the colour of water in a place that has very little of it, the colour of sky above a landscape that makes the sky feel closer — is adorned with the visual language of the Orient: intricate patterns, botanical motifs, the decorative tradition of cultures that turned the act of looking at beautiful objects into a form of contemplation. The palm rises through it, rooted and reaching simultaneously, the way all living things that have survived difficult conditions somehow manage to be both.
This is not a painting about the desert. It is a painting about needing one.
