Still Memento
STILL MEMENTO
The greatest painters in the history of Western art obsessed over two subjects above all others. The still life — flowers, fruit, vessels, the ordinary objects of a table — and the vanitas, the skull placed among those same objects as a reminder that everything on that table, and everything around it, and the hand that painted it, would one day be gone.
They were not separate traditions. They were always the same conversation.
The flowers are at their most vivid in the moment before they begin to die. The fruit is most beautiful at the peak of ripeness, one day before the turn. The vessel holds what it holds for exactly as long as it holds it, and not a moment more. The skull does not interrupt the still life. It completes it — the final object on the table that makes every other object make sense.
Still Memento is that conversation, reborn in the language of an artist who cannot work inside boundaries that belong to someone else.
Jarrones and flowers and fruit explode across a vast canvas — vibrant, almost reckless in their colour, the kind of abundance that comes from someone who has stopped rationing their energy and simply let everything out at once. And there, among them, the skull — not as a threat or a warning, but as a companion. The oldest friend. The one who makes you appreciate the flowers with a clarity that comfort alone never could.
The canvas is not stretched. It arrives rolled — raw, uncontained, a painting that refuses the formality of a frame before it even reaches its collector. This is deliberate. The work is still alive. What you do with it, how you stretch it, where you hang it, how it changes in different light — that is part of the piece too.
At 105 × 159 cm this is the largest work in the collection and the most ambitious. It does not fill a wall so much as it becomes one.
