WHAT'S NEXT?
Not every painting knows where it is going.
Most works in a practice belong somewhere — to a series, to a period, to a recognisable visual language that explains their presence. They have context. They make sense in relation to what came before and what came after. But occasionally something emerges from the studio that belongs nowhere except to itself — a painting that tried things no other painting tried, that asked questions that were never quite answered, that contained within it the seeds of future series without ever becoming one itself.
What's Next? is that painting.
More than ten layers build a surface of extraordinary physical complexity — textures and reliefs that the image cannot fully convey, passages that require proximity to understand, a material depth built through techniques being tested for the first time and never repeated in quite this combination again. Some of those techniques found their way into other works. Some dissolved into the practice without a trace. All of them are here, coexisting in a composition that is simultaneously asking the question its title poses and refusing to answer it.
There is a particular beauty in the transitional object — the work that exists between one thing and another, that belongs to the moment of not yet knowing. What's Next? is a record of an artist in genuine motion: not consolidating, not executing, but searching. And what makes it so singular is precisely that the search did not resolve into a series. It resolved into this — one unrepeatable painting that contains more material experimentation than most bodies of work, and wears that density as its own kind of magnificence.
The works that never find their continuation are often the most fully themselves.
