"Beneath This, I Was" is a minimalist abstract painting built upon the remains of a repurposed old carved wood panel once used for printmaking. The deep marks and grooves from that past life were never erased, but instead embraced and integrated, creating a textured, scarred foundation for something entirely new.The composition is quiet but charged. A heavily worked black surface holds the history of the piece like a skin of memory, while two minimal shapes—one organic and raw in yellow, the other sharp and structured in cobalt blue—hover in contrast. The tension between them suggests a silent conversation between past and present, soft and hard, instinct and form.This artwork explores the idea of rebuilding, not by starting over, but by honouring what came before.
